\nWhere mosquitoes and Tarantulas play,
\nWhere never is heard
\nAn encouraging word,
\nAnd the dust never settles all day,<\/p>\n

Home, home on the Ranger,
\nWe’re stuck in Guantanamo Bay,
\nAnd never is heard,
\nThat most welcome word,
\nThat we’re leaving for Norfolk next day.<\/p>\n

How often at night
\nBy a feeble flashlight,
\nWith no help from the glittering stars,
\nHave we stood there askance,
\nWith the bugs in our pants,
\nOh there’s no one with troubles like ours.<\/p>\n

Oh we’re in a land,
\nWhere the rocks, dust, and sand.
\nChoke engines and pilots and things,
\nAnd for over a week.
\nThere’s been no campho-phenique<\/a>,
\nTo put on our mosquito stings,<\/p>\n

We would gladly exchange,
\nOur roost on the range,
\nFor most any civilized spot,
\nBut since we must roam,
\nWhy can’t we go home,
\nGuantanamo Bay’s too darn hot.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This “filk” may have been written sometime between January and April, 1939 when the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Ranger (CV-4) was at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Although the author was not attributed on the typewritten paper I have, it was possibly written by my father George William Palmer.
